Russell named dean of the College of Education and Leadership
Freda R. Russell, Ph.D., has been named dean of the College of Education and Leadership at Cardinal Stritch University. Russell joined the University in July 2003 and has served as faculty member, director of student placements, director of teacher education and, most recently, as associate dean of the School of Education. Russell will occupy the dean’s chair following the promotion of Anthea Bojar, Ph.D., to executive vice president for academic affairs at Stritch. Russell is the first African-American dean at Stritch and her appointment began Aug. 16.
“I am excited to be a part of the team that makes decisions to move the University forward,” Russell said. “I am eager to bring a voice of multiple perspectives to the table.” Read more here.
University recovering from recent flood damage
University staff and external cleanup crews spent the final days of July and the first half of August diligently working to repair flood damage that occurred on the main campus as a result of torrential rainfall on July 22. Flooding occurred in the basement of every building with the exception of new Bonaventure Hall, the Powerhouse, and the Stein Center. There was also some main floor flooding of the Student Union, which required the replacement of the Union’s tile floor.
A National Disaster Recovery Team from Belfor, as well as a crew from Total Cleaning, has assisted in the cleanup efforts. Anchor Moving has been on campus as well, moving furniture, boxes, files, etc., from affected areas. Critical and high traffic areas were restored in time for the new semester, and this cleanup work did not affect the timeline for the opening of the renovated Athletics facilities or the new Information Commons on the first floor of the Library. Both of the projects should be completed by the start of the fall semester.
Stritch wraps up successful run at Wisconsin State Fair
Stritch has completed another successful year at the Wisconsin State Fair, which took place Aug. 5-15. A large group of dedicated volunteers manned the Stritch booth with a new backdrop that featured a colorful photograph of main campus. High school and college students stopped by for information about Stritch and its programs, and alumni came over to share stories about their careers and how Stritch was able to help them. The booth received an increase in inquiries from previous years.

Stritch students lend a hand
About a half dozen Cardinal Stritch University students did more than watch the flooding on Port Washington Road during the massive July 22 rainstorms. They braved the rising water and helped. During the height of the rush hour chaos, Kayla Chapman, Spencer Renn, Chris Mayeaux, Kayleigh Horder, Brittney Daum, and Justin and Jason Calvert waded into the water and pushed a stalled car to the side of the road – an effort that caught the attention of a WITI Fox 6 camera crew.
