Christmas Blessings from Stritch

Cardinal Stritch University wishes its alumni, near and far, a very merry Christmas and happy new year. May you enjoy celebrations with family, friends and loved ones, and find peace and rest this holiday season. View Stritch’s Christmas video here.

Stritch celebrates winter commencement

A total of 479 students received their degrees as Stritch’s held its winter commencement ceremony Dec. 14 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The ceremony brought together undergraduate and graduate students from each of the University’s four colleges.

Stritch welcomed Dr. Mehmood Khan, executive vice president and chief scientific officer of global research and development for PepsiCo, as commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. The ceremony also featured a student speaker. Tabitha Smith, A.S. degree candidate, addressed her classmates and offered a reflection on her time at Stritch.

The day’s events began with a special Baccalaureate Mass for graduating students. Immediately following Mass, graduates were invited to a celebratory brunch.

Open Studio exhibition to highlight student art

The Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery will feature visual arts students’ works-in-progress in an Open Studio exhibition from Nov. 23 –Jan. 5.

The exhibition will highlight the students’ methods, progress, and creative discoveries over the fall semester. One area of the gallery will function as a critique space for professors and students over the final weeks of the semester.

Faculty/Staff News

Dr. Mark Gesner, assistant professor and faculty chair of community engaged learning & leadership in the College of Business and Management, earned his doctorate in leadership for the advancement of  learning and service in higher education from Stritch in December 2013. His dissertation is titled, “Relationships Yield Mutually Beneficial Results: The Critical Role of Campus Leaders in Creating and Sustaining Effective Community Partnerships.”

Dr. Peter Jonas, professor in the doctoral leadership department, presented “Learning How to Use Humor to Enhance Leadership, Communities, and Student Success” for the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay Institute for Learning Partnership in October 2013. Jonas presented two sessions, “Developing a Positive Culture through Leadership” and “Enhancing Leadership through Humor,” at the Midwest Academy of Management conference in Milwaukee in October 2013. Jonas also served as a keynote speaker for the Racine Youth Offender Correctional Institute, presenting “Building Your Career through Education” in November 2013.

Dr. Amy Toson, professor in the College of Education and Leadership, had an article, “Delivering on Equity: Implications for Decision-makers,” published in the December 2013 policy brief from The Swift Center’s School-wide Integrated Framework for Transformation.

Athletics News

Volleyball claims first-ever division title, trip to national tournament

The Cardinal Stritch University Women’s Volleyball team took the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) by storm and clinched the North Division title with an impressive conference record of 15-2 and an overall record of 28-13 this season. The season concluded with the team receiving a bid to the national tournament for the first time in Stritch volleyball history.

Tennis off to a strong start at Stritch

This fall marked a big year for Stritch as the University welcomed six new sports, including, among others, men's and women's tennis. As the former assistant coach for the tennis team at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a former Division I tennis player at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, head Coach Mark Goldin brings diverse experience to Stritch's tennis program. Assisting Goldin is Orsolya Golovics, who hails from Hungary and used to play tennis for Northern Arizona University.

Stritch well represented on the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes Award list

A total of 11 student-athletes at Cardinal Stritch University were named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes during the fall semester. Leading the way was the Stritch Wolves women's soccer program with five student-athletes. Stritch teams also represented on the NAIA Scholar-Athlete list are women's cross country, men's soccer, and women's volleyball.

Adopt-a-School kicks off for 2013

The Alumni Association’s Adopt-a-School program for 2013-14 will kick off with a holiday festival at our partner school, St. Joseph’s Academy Friday, Dec. 20 from 5-7 p.m.

We will be donating new and gently used winter wear items for St. Joseph Academy students for the winter wear supply drive. Students are often in need of winter hats, gloves, boots, and coats during these colder months. Thank you to those who signed up to volunteer and those who donated items for the winter wear drive.

All alumni are invited to join us for the 2014 basketball alumni reunion, celebrating our women’s and men’s basketball alumni athletes on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Several activities are being planned which include a Men's and Women’s alumni game and a hosted cocktail reception at The Three Lions Pub, thanks to sponsors David Price, ’07, ’13 and Chris Tinker, ’06, ’10.

As part of this year’s reunion, the 2002-03 Men's and 2009-10 Women's Basketball teams will be honored during a special half-time ceremony of the Men's and Women's games taking place that afternoon against Purdue University-Calumet.

Alumni Reunion Weekend: Class of '64 don't miss your reunion!

The reunion planning committee has been actively planning an exciting variety of activities for the Jubilarian Reunion weekend taking place June 20-22.

Committee members Pat Meyer Buechel, ’64 and Barbara Mlot Olson, ‘64 have sent the class additional reunion details along with a class list.

We need your help in reaching out to classmates. We are currently trying to find classmates the Alumni Association has lost contact with. If you are in contact with any of your ’64 classmates, please spread the word about the reunion.

June 20-22 is your 25th reunion weekend and it promises to be an exciting one!  Mark your calendars today. The Alumni Association is gearing up for a full spring calendar with events that will cover a wide array of interests:

Bring your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews to our 2014 Alumni Family Day event to see the Stritch theater production of “The Shoemaker and the Elves!” Alumni packages are $5 per person and includes the show and a pre-show event with a special craft and snack.

Tickets will be available beginning in January.

There is still room to join the Alumni Pilgrimage in May

There are still space available for the 2014 Alumni Pilgrimage trip, taking place May 23-June 3.

Join Alumni Board President Phyllis Schaefer, ’91, ’93, ’95, ’04 and Alumni Board member Annette Frink, ’73, ‘83 for the trip of a lifetime to discover the roots of where it all began for Stritch. The pilgrimage will span 10 days and includes stops in Rome, Assisi, Greccio, LaVerna, and ends in Augsburg, Germany.

Walking in their footsteps, you will learn about the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare and spend time learning about the founding roots of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in Augsburg, Germany.

Pilgrimage highlights include:
-Opening Mass at a church located on the fringe of the Roman Forum.
-You will attend Pope Francis’ Papal Blessing in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, May 25.
-Time in Assisi will include Mass at the Tomb of St. Francis, and opportunities to visit most of the places connected with both St. Francis and St. Clare.
-You will see La Verna, that place where St. Francis received the Stigmata.
During the time in Augsburg, Germany you will meet people who are part of the history of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi.

Cost: $3,700 double occupancy (discounted by $500) – all inclusive (only costs are a few meals on own).

Student Government Association campaigns for change

Mother-daughter doctoral grads are the first in Stritch history

Kristin Kellner Schulz was greeted by a familiar face on the stage when she graduated with a doctoral degree in leadership at Stritch’s Dec.14 commencement ceremony: her own mother, Mary Kellner.

Kristin followed in the footsteps of her mother, Mary, a noted civic leader and member of Stritch’s Board of Trustees, who also received a doctoral degree in leadership from Stritch in 2007. The pair represents the first mother-daughter doctoral program graduates in University history.
