Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing nominated for Agape Advocate Award

Stritch’s Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing has been named a finalist for the 2012 Agape Advocate Award, sponsored by the Agape Community Center. The award will be presented to an organization that demonstrates continuous support and implementation of the center’s mission and values.

The center serves communities in northwest Milwaukee, offering after school activities, tutoring, community meals, senior recreational activities, and health initiatives. Stritch’s nursing programs work closely with the center by providing onsite blood pressure tests, hearing and vision screenings, medication consultations, and general health education.
As a finalist, Stritch was recognized at the annual Agape Awards Dinner on Nov. 17 at the Wisconsin Club. Read more.

Recent 75th anniversary events a success

(Pictured above: Irena's daughter, Jeannie Smith talks to a group of students)

The events planned in celebration of the University’s 75th anniversary have engaged a number of Stritch alumni, students, friends, employees and others, with some notable recent highlights:

Oct. 26-Nov. 4: “Irena’s Vow” Theater Performance
Performances of this true story, staged in collaboration with Renaissance Theaterworks, were a powerful testament to the sacrifice and determination of a Polish Catholic nurse who saved a dozen Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust during WWII. Click here to view a short video feature.

Nov. 1-2: Interfaith dialogue with Dr. Eboo Patel
Stritch hosted nationally recognized interfaith scholar and author Dr. Eboo Patel for a series of talks heard by hundreds of students, alumni, faculty, staff and business leaders. His visit expounded upon his work building interfaith understanding on college campuses and in the American dialogue, and underscored the many years of effort the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, Stritch’s founders, have put into keeping interfaith dialogue at the forefront in Milwaukee and beyond. Annual Fund News
Fall Phonathon raises more than $16,000 for Annual Fund

Thanks to your support our students were able to raise $16,640 during the 16-day Fall Phonathon held Oct. 14 - Nov. 4.

Donations will help support the "75 Days of Giving for Stritch" campaign, with the overall goal to raise $37,000 for the University's Annual Fund by Dec. 31. Our student call team put together a special thank you video you can view here.

"75 Days of Giving for Stritch" campaign continues
In honor of the University’s 75th anniversary celebration, a special “75 Days of Giving for Stritch” campaign began Oct. 18 and runs until Dec. 31, the conclusion of the 75th anniversary year.

The 75-day campaign aims to raise $37,000 for Stritch’s Annual Fund in honor of the University's 1937 founding, and to attract 75 new donors for the fund. To date, almost $17,000 has been raised.

Donations to the Stritch Annual Fund are crucial to the continued funding of programs, facility upgrades and most importantly, student financial aid. Last year alone, more than 1,000 students benefited from gifts made to the Annual Fund through full or partial scholarships. Students are relying on your support - hear from Stephanie Coker on how donor support has impacted her life as a student on campus.

Throughout the campaign, videos have been shared with the Stritch community and on Stritch's YouTube channel, which illustrates the impact donor support has on Stritch and its students. View the videos here.

Alumni gather to celebrate the class of 1982
Alumni in attendance for the special gathering

More than 25 alumni gathered on campus on Oct. 27 to celebrate the 30-year class reunion of the class of 1982.

Festivities included a memorial mass in the new St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, a campus tour with a special stop at the University Archives, and a pre-show reception where attendees had a chance to catch up with classmates and some of their beloved professors, like David Oswald and Sister Justine Peter, OSF, ’50. The group then had a chance to see the powerful theater production of “Irena’s Vow.” Members of the class of 1982 were presented with special gifts from Alumni Association President, Phyllis Schaefer, ’91, ’93, ’95, ‘04 to commemorate their 30-year reunion.

Stritch Wolves takes on Notre Dame

(Stritch alums James Alfred, '96 and Kevin Crim, '99 traveled to Notre Dame to cheer on the Wolves)

It was an exciting night as three Wolves fan buses filled with alumni, students and staff headed down to the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus on Nov. 2. The group gathered to cheer on the men’s basketball team as they faced the Fighting Irish in a special pre-season exhibition game.

Despite a big night by senior Jeremy D’Amico, the No. 5 Wolves could not top the No. 22/23-ranked NCAA Division I Irish. It was a close match with both teams tied at 34-34 at the half, but Notre Dame would pull ahead with a 70-56 victory.
Stritch, which was 30-6 in 2011-12 opened  the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 7 as they faced the Judson University Eagles. Follow the team here.

Men’s Soccer team makes it to NAIA National Tournament; Celebrates record-breaking year

The Wolves certainly have plenty to be proud of as they faced the No. 6 Columbia College Cougars in the opening round of the 2012 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men’s Soccer National Tournament on Nov. 17. This was the program’s first-ever appearance in the national tournament. Unfortunately, the Wolves fell 8-7 in a shoot-out in the opening round game.

The team still has many accomplishments to celebrate during this record-breaking season. In addition to making it to national stage, they also had their first-ever Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Regular Season Championship. The program was also recognized with the CCAC Coach of the Year (Kevin Brennan), CCAC Freshman of the Year (Peter Bannister), and five CCAC All-Conference selections (Peter Bannister, Oliver Bell, Jim Jones, Joshua Roberts, Shay Douglas).

Alumni Association announces “Adopt-a-School” school supply drive
(Pictured: Alumni Board member Annette Frink, '73, '83 with student from St. Joseph at Curriculum Night)

The "Adopt-a-School" program  partners alumni with students and teachers from a school with demonstrated need. This year's chosen school is St. Joseph Academy in Milwaukee.

The Alumni Association is partnering with the school in helping to host their Santa's Workshop holiday event on  Dec. 18. As part of the event, the Alumni Association is conducting a school supply drive for the students and the school. Oftentimes by December, students are running low on a number of the needed supplies such as paper, pencils, glue sticks, markers, crayons, etc. School principal, Todd Beadle, ’04 says that students are also in need of winter hats and gloves during the colder months.

The Alumni Association will be collecting donated school supplies and winter hats and gloves for St. Joseph Academy students through Dec. 14. Items can be dropped off at the Alumni Association office on campus or email alumni@stritch.edu and we can arrange pick-up. The Alumni Board plans to deliver the donated supplies during the holiday event on Dec. 18 and help facilitate the workshop festivities. If you are interested in volunteering for the Dec. 18 event at the school, contact us at alumni@stritch.edu or call (414) 410-4203.
